As Orwell’s biographer Jeffrey Meyers notes, Nineteen Eighty-Four's vision of a dilapidated war-ravaged Britain was more of a synthesis of the contemporary world than a prophecy. Remarkably, for a book which has enjoyed such longevity, Nineteen Eighty-Four (published in 1949) is very much a product of its time.
